Nicolo dell'Abate (1509/16 ? -1571) "Le Sommeil de Vénus", 1560-1570 - Huile sur bois, 109 x 90,5 cm - Musée des beaux-arts de Quimper © Musée des beaux-arts de Quimper

Oil on wood

873-1-635

Bequeathed by Jean-Marie de Silguy in 1864

H. 109 cm - L. 90,5 cm

The scarcity of paintings by Nicolo dell’Abate gives special value to this work despite its mutilation. It was originally rectangular in shape, with the body of Venus depicted along its length. The deterioration along its right side led its owner to change its shape to oval.  Its sensual charm characterises the mannerist style of the painter at the time he decorated the Palace of Fontainebleau.
