PORTRAIT OF MAX JACOB
1933
Charcoal on paper
2005-9-1
Gift of madame Prieur in 2005
H. 31,5 cm - L. 24 cm
Lionel Floch, born in Quimper, practiced his art parallel to a career as receiver of the tax recording. He settled in Pont-Croix in 1923 where he enjoyed a workshop at the Hotel des Voyageurs. He draws many scenes showing the difficulties of the daily life of the inhabitants of Cape Sizun. Some of them, preserved in the museum of the fine arts of Quimper, are engraved on wood by the doctor Tuset. They contrast with the gaiety and shimmering colors of the large painting A pardon in bigouden country ordered, in 1934. Lionel Floch regularly frequented the bubbling intellectual milieu of Quimper in the 1930s. Augustin Tuset, Giovanni Leonardi and Jean Moulin were close friends, as did Max Jacob, despite the difference in age. "Drawer and portraitist with a magic hand" according to Jean Caveng, Lionel Floch paints portraits that reflect his friendships: a vibrant portrait of Jean Moulin in 1932 and a few quickly brushed drawings by Max Jacob.
