This drawing is a very complete preliminary study of the Sacrifice d’Iphigénie, a huge picture (H. 422 – L. 613) commissioned in 1755 by Frederic II of Prussia for the marble salon in the New Palace in Potsdam, where it is still kept, and exhibited at the1756 Salon where it created a sensation. The noble and heroic attitude of the King of Greece, forced to sacrifice his daughter, was much admired.
