Hermitage on a rock
circa 1630
Brush with brown and yellow bistre wash over black chalk lines on paper
873-2-3
Bequeathed by Jean Marie de Silguy in 1864
H. 9,1 cm - L. 21,7 cm
This work is part of a series of drawings used to teach Prince Gaston of Orleans, brother of Louis XIII, who had withdrawn to the Court of Lorraine between 1629 and 1631. This is an « invented landscape », a mysterious hermitage built on a rocky outcrop which can be reached by a footbridge. Callot cleverly plays on the contrast between the tones of the wash and the white paper.
