François Dubois belongs to the latest generation of Davidian neoclassicism that extends well into the 19th century.  This scene was inspired by the tragedy of Euripides, and contains all the ingredients of a neoclassicism inspired by antiquity, such as the costumes, the seat and the décor, as well as its setting in a frieze and the nobility of the faces.  However, the use of lighting to accentuate the theatricality of the scene already reveals the influence of romanticism which Dubois could not ignore.
