Louis-Léopold Boilly Visiteurs, dit La Promenade

Oil on canvas

873-1-779

Bequeathed by Jean-Marie de Silguy in 1864

H. 32 cm - L. 25 cm

This study is almost incomprehensible: the child’s arm is cut to the right, we see part of another person to the left.  This work is the study of a small group of people for Le Tableau du Sacre exposé aux regards du public (Picture of the Coronation exposed to public viewing). At its presentation at the 1808 Salon, the huge painting by David, Le Sacre (the Coronation), caused a sensation.  Boilly works in his usual way by breaking up the composition into small groups which he paints onto a brown background.
