Breton woman and child in landscape
circa 1904
Oil on canvas
98-6-1
Purchased in the art trade in 1998 with the help of the French state and the Region of Brittany (FRAM)
H. 47 cm - L. 72,5 cm
In 1904 and 1905, Delaunay spends his holidays at the tip of the Pays Bigouden in Saint-Guénolé-Penmarc’h. His vocation as a painter is confirmed, and he is very impressed by the work of Gauguin who has just died and whose retrospectives he has just seen. The background is simplified and painted with large splashes of colour, in the style of the School of Pont-Aven. Facial details are effaced and the painter concentrates on the play of colours, an indication of his subsequent development.
