Portraits of Nicolaes van der Haer and of Dana van Vrijberghe
1661
Oil on canvas
873-1-137
Bequeathed by Jean-Marie de Silguy in 1864
H. 81,5 cm - L. 65,5 cm
Thanks to the coat of arms, we know the identity of the two people who were from the upper middle class in The Hague. Nicolaes van der Haer was an alderman, and they were married in 1652.
These two 1661 portraits testify to their social success, but retain an appropriate sobriety and dignity. They are represented in the precise setting of a couple « in heraldry », the husband is on the right of his wife, in other words in the place of honour.
