Peasants playing Tric-Trac in a cabaret
1663
Oil on canvas
D. 87-1
Donated by the Louvre Museum in 1986
MNR 933
H. 37 cm - L. 29 cm
Bega specialised in interior scenes and scenes of genre as well as rustic scenes. The history of this painting is unusual: it was acquired in 1768 by Empress Catherine II of Russia, then it was seized by the Soviet authorities and became part of the collections of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad.
After 1918, the Russians sold it. In 1945, it was found in Germany by French troops in a store of works of art belonging to Nazi dignitaries. No doubt, a trader had exchanged it on behalf of Goering, in place of so-called degenerate works seized from Jewish collections.
