Valkenburg visited Surinam, a Dutch colony in South America, in order to draw and paint landscapes, plantations and examples of fauna and flora.

This trip was part of a mission to develop trade with that country and to move in settlers.  The artificial accumulation of animals and fruit represents the wonder shown by Westerners at natural curiosities.

The museum exhibits another panel by this painter depicting fruits from Surinam.
