Landscape with sandy slopes and a peasant couple
circa 1630–1650
Oil on canvas
873-1-210
Bequeathed by Jean-Marie de Silguy in 1864
H. 60,6 cm - L. 82,4 cm
De Vadder, alongside Jacques d’Arthois, is the most talented representative of the Brabant school of landscape painting in the 17th century.
The vigorous style of this landscape suits Vadder well and he obtained great success with similar landscapes of the area around Brussels, in which dynamic compositions and light effects are skilfully thought out.
The figures could be David Teniers the younger (1610 – 1690) who often collaborated, unless they are Vadder himself.
