Nicolaes Verkolje (Delft, 1673 – Amsterdam, 1746) / Suzanne et les vieillards (Suzanne and the Old People), early 18th century / Oil on canvas, H. 34.5 – L. 42.5)

Oil on canvas

873-1-140

Bequeathed by Jean-Marie de Silguy in 1864

H. 34,5 cm - L. 42,5 cm

At a time when religious tensions faded, religious painting reappeared. Verkolje asserts himself as a specialist in biblical scenes which he paints in the style of scenes of genre.

The composition is clever and full of details and objects executed in a smooth and precious manner.

The painting appears from the end of the 18th century in a French collection.

This is not surprising, because as a triumph of neo-classicism, it is, for art lovers, the most accessible example of Nordic painting.
