Pieter Fransz. de Grebber (Haarlem, circa 1600 – Haarlem, 1652/1653) / La Vierge enseignant à lire à l’Enfant Jésus, also called La Leçon de lecture (The Virgin teaching the Infant Christ to read, also called The Reading Lesson), circa 1630 / Oil on wood, H. 95,5 – L. 74

Oil on canvas

85-4

Acquired in 1985 at the Amsterdam art market

H. 96 cm - L. 73,5 cm

The work bears the signature « Rembrandt » and was attributed to this painter until the early 20th century.  It bears similarities to the work of the Dutch master with its part profane, part sacred theme, and also because of the effect of light spreading over the blond forms.  But the signature was false and intended to deceive.

Nevertheless, this work, now attributed to de Grebber, is one of the masterpieces of Dutch painting of the time.
