This work comes from the chapel of the Couvent des Minimes in Saint-Pol-de-Léon. The monk at the bottom left is François de Paule, and the sovereign on the right no doubt Louis XIII in the guise of Saint Louis. The nun in the bottom right is the donor of the painting, or a mother abbess.

Peter Van Mol had worked in France, becoming painter for the Queen of Austria, and this work dates from that period.  He was greatly influenced by Rubens, as demonstrated in this masterpiece which escaped the ravages of the Revolution.
