René Quillivic (1879-1909) La Brodeuse de Pont l'Abbé, 1907, bronze, 83 x 102 x 111 cm, musée des beaux-arts de Quimper, don du baron de Rotschild en 1909 © ADAGP, Paris

Bronze

09-1-2

Gifted by Edmond de Rothschild in 1909

H. 83 cm ; W. 102 cm ; D. 111 cm

This work, one of Quillivic’s first, symbolises a revival of Breton sculpture.  To interpret the craft of embroidery - a speciality in the Pays Bigouden, he adopts a thoughtful and harmonious overall design, worthy of classical statuary.  But he is aware of realistic details in his treatment of embroidery and clothing in the field of folk arts.
