Maurice Denis first visited Perros-Guirec in 1883 and he returned many times. At the end of July, traditional regattas were held and red-sailed fishing boats competed against white-sailed pleasure boats. Everyone assembled on the quayside to watch swimming and canoeing competitions. With its decorative innovations in respect of the treatment of the sea and the mast, and the boldness of the composition, this canvas is one of the masterpieces of Nabi painting.
