View of the port of Pont-Aven
Circa 1893-1894
Oil on canvas
76-2-1
Acquired in 1976 – private sale
H. 150 cm - L. 300 cm
This masterpiece by Maufra, with its unusual format, was probably intended as a decoration. It is a picturesque scene depicting the caulking of a lugger, beached at low tide in the mudflats of Bas Bourgneuf, at the foot of mount Saint-Guénolé. On the left can be seen the first mill on the Aven and a little further behind the village steeple. Some women are bringing firewood for the fire. The aesthetics of the Pont-Aven School are evident in the simplification of the layout and the strong decorative rhythms.
