During the winter of 1886-1887, Gauguin works for the ceramist Ernest Chaplet, not only to produce ceramics that can be sold more easily than his canvases, but also because he is interested in sculpture and objects.  For the majority of these pieces, which are both objects and sculptures, he reuses motifs that he designed in Brittany the previous summer, for example shepherds and shepherdesses, sheep and geese.
