Oil on canvas

97-4-1

Acquired in 1997 from a private collector with the help of the French state and the Region of Brittany (FRAM)

H. 41cm ; L. 33 cm

During his stay in the Bigouden area, the artist imagines this « Notre-Dame », which does not really exist.  As a background he uses the Saint-Guénolé rocks. The infant Jesus is dressed as a girl, as infant boys were in Brittany in those days.  The artist is inspired by the half-body portraits of the time of the Italian Renaissance, which he had admired the previous year.  The title is carved onto a rustic frame in the Breton style, in the same way as the name of a saint would be carved onto the pedestal of a statue within a chapel.
